Ettus USRP X440 Software Defined Radio Device
The Ettus USRP X440 (Part Number: 788670-01) is a highly capable multichannel software-defined radio (SDR) designed for developing advanced systems in the generation and analysis of wideband signals. This product incorporates a novel transceiver architecture based on direct sampling. The channels contain MMPX front-end connections to the internal converters, which perform well into the range of 30 MHz to 4 GHz. The number of channels affords a very high degree of channel density with eight independent transmit and eight receive channels, providing up to 1.6 GHz instantaneous bandwidth on each channel and an aggregated bandwidth of 3.2 GHz. One of the primary benefits of this direct sampling approach is excellent coherent phase stability, less than 1° RMS between phases in one device and less than 2° RMS between devices. This is ideal for multichannel applications such as direction finding and beam-forming.
Central to the concept of the USRP X440 is a high-performance Xilinx Zynq UltraScale+ RFSoC (ZU28DR-2) FPGA super-chips, which incorporates a quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 processor for advanced on-board processing. This unit will support open-source tool flows for software such as UHD (version 4.5 or later), RFNoC, and GNU Radio, thus making for extreme flexibility for algorithm development. The processing capabilities require high-speed data handling via 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) dual QSFP28 ports, logically indicated by the requirement for streaming the vast amounts of data which are generated by its wide bandwidths. A built-in GPS-disciplined oven-controlled oscillator (OCXO), brings exceptional frequency accuracy and synchronicity of multiple devices.
The Ettus USRP X440 has been designed to be used for demanding applications in research and prototyping. Its high channel count and phase stability are ideal in the radar system and electronic warfare (EW) areas, as well as in the 5G and 6G massive MIMO research. The wide instantaneous bandwidth is complemented by the ability to interface with external frequency conversion circuits, useful for SATCOM (Satcom Communications) ground stations and the millimeter-wave (mmWave) developments. This integration of hardware and software into one product provides a capable mechanism for developing and deploying the next generation of wireless devices.
